Very interesting stuff. The other piece is that check usage is apparently down in a big way, to the point that it's getting to be difficult to find a merchant who will accept them. It used to be that merchants preferred checks to credit cards because of the fees (I remember paying for somethig with AmEx about 15 years ago and the merchant asked for me to use another card because the fees were lower for him), but with the expense and unreliability around collecting on bad checks, it seems like credit cards are the lesser of the evils.

Cahn is shrill. Leitaer is not, in fact, he's surprisingly optimistic, gentle, humanistic, and even idealistic, considering he's a banker who designed the Euro.

GoatChowder - Thanks, haven't looked at that.

Erik - I didn't think about it, and I'm going to decline the invitation to. The IPR discussions are such a damn black hole, and shrill. My interests lie elsewhere these days.

I'm a big fan of the Bernard Lietaer system (http://www.transaction.net) and the TimeDollars system of Edgar Cahn. I'm curious if you've read their books ("The Future of Money", and "No More Throw-Away People") what you think of them.

Hmm, while this is very interesting I'm wondering about the figures used here. Both are obviously taken from the original article and so are copyrighted.

Ben, did you get the permission to use them here or is this just common-sense in the blogosphere? I'm noticing a strong trend to 're-use' material found on other websites, regardless whether the material is copyrighted or not. Maybe I am completely off the track here but in my opinion this falls under willful infringement, no? Furthermore one could say that since you are displaying paid ads on your site, you are also financally benefiting by using the material...

I am not a lawyer and I don't have any clue concerning US laws in this regard - I am just curious...
